Designer Spotlight – Shanah Flodstrom of Little Houses

We have a treat for our Dedicated fashionistas this week! Seeing as fall weather is practically upon us, what better time to talk to a designer whose love of this season shows through her designs? Continue reading to learn more about Shanah Flodstrom, designer and creator of Little Houses Clothing.

Meet Shanah

Living and designing in Vancouver, Canada, Shanah has a creative and artistic spirit and an eye for detail. She recalls fashion design practically finding her,“I was in a Fine Arts program before I went to Fashion School, and my favorite thing was to screen print and do lino block prints onto fabric. I started to get really excited about the idea of actually being able to make something out of this fabric, so I dropped out of Art School and switched to Fashion. Best decision I ever made.”

After graduating from school in December of 2006, she opened Little Houses a month later selling jewelry and bags. Although the first year included non-stop work and exhaustion, it was worth it. Shanah says, “I can finally just sew, and it’s a great feeling to have all those days of no sleep pay off.”

Apart from being a designer, Shanah loves spending time in her cozy apartment with her black pug Olive and riding around Vancouver on her bike. A true creative, she has a knack for making old and castoff things beautiful, “My apartment in Montreal was furnished on pretty much all street-found furniture, and it was the nicest place I ever lived in.” When she is not designing, Shanah can be found knitting warm garments and accessories, drinking coffee, and creating art through photographs and paintings.

Formed by Shanah in early 2007, Little Houses is characterized by pretty designs that fit naturally while drawing interest with dramatic features. Because Little Houses focuses primarily on outerwear, buttons are naturally a huge part of the line’s aesthetic and help portray an almost-military look.

So where does the inspiration for these fabulous designs come from? Shanah explained that inspiration is everywhere, “Sometimes I will see a design I like, and I try and think about how I can make it my own. I also have some really artistic friends who inspire me all the time.” She also revealed where her love of jackets comes from, “I love fall, right now is my absolute favorite time of year. It makes me feel inspired.” These insights alone make Little Houses perfect for the fall!
