At London Fashion Week last month I was finally able to get to an Orla Kiely show in person. Last season I was unable to get to London and Josie covered it on my behalf – and in February 2012 I got horribly sick and had to skip it, so this was a long awaited moment for me.
The brand itself is one of my favourites, whimsical, preppy and incredibly feminine, the Spring 2014 collection was no exception. The collection presentation, which was housed in a gallery, had a Wes Anderson “Moonlight Kingdom” vibe – each model had various “on safari/camp” tasks to perform whilst the soundtrack “In the Jungle” rolled on.
The dresses, skirts, shorts and cute sweaters were typically Orla Kiely, sweet but not too saccharine – the prints echoed the “on safari” motif – with giraffes, rhinos and lions – plus the odd racoon for good measure. I particularly loved the handbags and coin purses.
